Northern Spy Apple


Also known as the Northern Spie or Northern Pie Apple.

The variety was planted in the orchard belonging to Heman Chapin, East Bloomfield, New York, United States from seeds brought from Salisbury, Connecticut, USA. Identified in about 1800 and was put on the market in 1840. Wagener apple is believed to be one of the parents.

Northern Spy is known for its winter hardiness. It is a natural powerful variety, which will produce a relatively large tree. It takes a long time to come in carrying, and there is a tendency to biennial bearing. Northern Spy is suitable as a rootstock for other varieties. It is one of the parents of the popular MM106 rootstock.

The base color is green, covered with red stripes on the sunny side. The white meat is juicy, crisp and mildly sweet with a rich, aromatic sour taste. The apple is known for their high vitamin C content.

The apples ripen late and can be stored for long. It is suitable for desserts and pies, but is also used for juice and cider.
